Archaeological Collections
The collections of the Archaeology Department include artifacts dated from the Neolithic to modern times. Initially, the collection was formed by random finds handed over by the residents of the city and surrounding areas. The first systematic excavations in the Old Town of Stargard began in 1960. The clearing of war damage and preparation of the area for new construction provided researchers with the opportunity to learn about settlement processes and acquire a range of archaeological artifacts. Research in the 1960s and 1970s focused primarily on the Stargard stronghold and the town's foundation. At the beginning of the 21st century, with the development of the city and an increased awareness of heritage preservation, the MAH in Stargard began multifaceted archaeological work, often covering entire former blocks of the Old Town.
The collection of the Archaeology Department consists of several hundred thousand artifacts: fragments of ceramic vessels, wooden, metal, glass, stone, bone, and antler artifacts, as well as textiles.
Artifacts discovered during research by the Archaeology Department are processed and progressively published in Stargardia, as part of the Archaeology of Stargard series, as well as the popular science publication Archaeological Research of the Archaeological and Historical Museum in Stargard.
